August 2017 Tongariro river Fishing Report

Hooked up in the Tauranga Taupo River

10 August 2017

We hope all is well and you are coping with all the rain and bad weather. Looks like the weather is finally looking up it has definitely warmed up here in paradise. We are busy making a few alterations here at the lodge so should be good for another busy summer. Tracy has also been flat out trying some new dishes and already becoming very popular.

The fishing has been awesome as usual all though the wind hasn't been that great for the boat fisherman out on Lake Taupo. We have have been doing a lot of fishing on the Tongariro River as well as Lake Otamangakau and the back country.

If you don't know DOC have made some changes too the regulations for the Taupo waters this season as there are too many fish?? So they have increased the bag limit from 3 fish per day to 6 fish, and the size limit from 40cm to 35cm. It will be interesting to see what this does to the average size of trout we catch.

The fish this spawning season are most definitely a lot bigger with most days averaging just under 4lbs and lots of them. Without a doubt this would have to be the best year I have seen for size and numbers of fish and will stay really good from now till October so be sure to organize a trip.

As far as the magical summer fishing goes we had huge numbers on dry flies last year so am looking forward too the same this year. Our calendar is already getting full so make sure you get in early with your bookings especially the heli fishing so I can be sure to get you into the best block .

We are pleased to announce that we have just launched a webcam view from the lodge, the idea being for people to see the state of the river.
