I have been looking forward to this trip for a while, a heli-fishing trip with Shaun and Martin who I have been fishing with for a few years now. We had planned this trip into a couple of blocks on the Ripia river, which is a tributary of the Mohaka and is known to hold browns and rainbows to a good size.Well what a fantastic trip it turned out to be we left TroutBeck Fishing Lodge about 7ish after breakfsat and some excited chat about the next couple of days fishing, after a 45min drive and we are loading our gear into the chopper at helisika. We are off flying deep into beautiful forest in Hawkes Bay region, and are treated to a landing right in the middle of the amazing Ripia River. Next minute we are landing a beautiful 5lb rainbow in the pool right where the chopper landed, and you just knew we were going to have another great day.
We fished our way up this beautiful clear pristine back country river, the boys from Auckland were taking turns in landing fish out of some incredible looking pools on nymph and dry fly. The average size was a healthy 4-5lb with equal number of browns and rainbows, the best an awesome 8lb brown trout that we caught at the end of the day these heli-fishing days really blow me away and I am only the guide.! We had been working our way up towards a hut that is maintained by Helisika, and we arrived at about 6.30pm at the very comfortable hut where the helicopter had dropped all our gear after dropping us in the river earlier. We were very happy to have packed a beers in the chilly bag, and enjoyed on the helipad over looking the river valley enjoying the serenity surrounded by the wilderness. After wading the river and doing a fair bit of bush bashing we had built up an appetite, so the steak cooked on the open fire with the stars as a backdrop were sensational. Needless to say we had a great night's sleep perhaps the odd whiskey helped us sleep too but also great to sleep in a bed in the hut.
Unfortunately we only had a half day the next morning due to work commitments from one of the guys, so we decided to fish directly below the hut but still managed another 7 huge hard fighting fish, and it was 23 in total with an average of 4.5 to 5lbs which is bloody good fishing.
We headed back to the helipad to wait for the chopper well satisfied and happily discussing our fishing adventure in the incredible new zealand back country.
